I grew up in the suburbs of North-East Scotland, which I’d like to say was a magical land of lochs, selkies, and lore, but the truth’s a little more mundane. Still, we had a field, a bus stop for drinking beer beside, and so many books to read underneath the covers.

My writing started as a way to escape. These days, I live in Berlin, which is a giant rare jungle flower of wonderfulness, and I don’t need to run away from anything anymore. Still, the people in my stories spend a lot of their time escaping too—that, and tripping up, skinning their knees, trusting in the magic of three-legged crows...

I write because making things up for a living is the most fun I can imagine. Don’t believe the hype—writing isn’t a series of small tortures, eking words out, agonising over sentences. It’s the magic in the woods, the gingerbread house, the shiny golden door beneath your bed you didn’t know existed. Now I spend all day doing that, and teaching other people to do it too. Oh, and I play in a riot grrrl band, edit poetry for a journal, and host a lot of queer events. It’s pretty fun.
